At a Glance: What Moves the Tape
- CPI runs hot on both lines: headline +0.6% month over month and 3.7% year over year (3.6% expected, 3.4% prior); core +0.3% and 2.6% (0.2% and 2.5% expected). Energy +5.2%, gasoline +9.1%, shelter +0.4%. [BLS via CNBC, 08:30 ET; CBS News, 10/14]
- Yields up, futures down: the 10-year rose more than 6 basis points to about 5.28% to 5.31% and the 30-year to about 5.59%; S&P 500 futures slipped to −0.2% and Nasdaq 100 futures to −0.5% from small pre-data gains. [CNBC, 10/14]
- Houthis claim strikes on Aramco's Dhahran headquarters: the group also targeted Riyadh's King Khaled airport and an Aramco refinery and called Saudi oil sites legitimate targets. Brent holds near $106, WTI near $95.50. [ZeroHedge, 10/14; Investrade, 10/14]
- Banks split on fees versus flows: Morgan Stanley earned $3.03 vs. $2.91 expected on equities revenue up 41%; Bank of America earned $0.91 ($1.08 adjusted) vs. $1.10 and is down about 4%; BlackRock is up 3% to 5% on $205B of inflows. [MS 8-K, 10/14; CNBC, 10/14; TradingKey, 10/14]
- Fed calendar after the print: Barkin at 1:30 PM, the Beige Book at 2:00 PM, Goolsbee at 3:00 PM and Bowman late evening, two weeks before the October 28 FOMC, where swaps priced about 24% odds of a hike before the data. [ZeroHedge, 10/14]
1. Macro Pulse
Tuesday's close: flat index, busy underneath. The S&P 500 slipped 0.02% to 7,805.65, the Dow fell 179.56 points (−0.35%) to 51,670.99, the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.15% to 27,204.38 and the Russell 2000 fell 0.40% to 2,783.39. Memory stocks fell a second day, with the Roundhill Memory ETF down about 3.5%, while Meta rose 2.5%. Before the data, futures were firmer: S&P 500 +0.2% near 7,870, Dow +0.4%, Russell 2000 +0.3%, Nasdaq 100 −0.1%. [Investrade, 10/14; Investopedia via Yahoo Finance, 10/13; ZeroHedge, ~8:15 AM ET]
The print, line by line. Headline CPI rose 0.6% in September, lifting the annual rate to 3.7% from 3.4%. Core rose 0.3% for the month and 2.6% for the year, one tenth above consensus on both. Energy jumped 5.2% and gasoline 9.1%, about half the headline gain. Shelter rose 0.4%, used vehicles 0.7%, and food was flat. [BLS via CNBC, 10/14]
Rates reprice in minutes. The 10-year had eased to about 5.21% before the release, then jumped more than 6 basis points to between 5.278% and 5.306%, depending on the snapshot. The 30-year rose to about 5.59%, below last week's 24-year high. The 2-year closed Tuesday near 4.78%. The MOVE index of bond volatility sits near 101, up about 20 points in a month. [CNBC, 10/14; ZeroHedge, 10/14]
[ANALYSIS] The size matters as much as the direction. One tenth on core is not a shock, and options had priced only a 0.5% S&P move. But the market had been treating the oil spike as a headline problem the Fed could look through. A 0.3% core with shelter at 0.4% weakens that argument heading into the October 28 meeting.
Overseas: Europe up, Asia mixed. The STOXX 600 rose about 0.5% to 638.60 and the DAX gained 124 points to 25,384, helped by ASML. The FTSE 100 added 30 to 10,680. The Nikkei was flat near 67,744, the Hang Seng slipped 0.1% and the CSI 300 fell 1.4%. The Kospi lost 0.4% after Tuesday's 5.5% drop. China's September producer prices rose 5%, the fastest since June 2022. [Investrade, 10/14; ZeroHedge, 10/14]
Oil, dollar and gold. WTI rose about 1% to 1.6% to near $95.50 and Brent held near $106.30 after the Aramco strike and reports of two commercial vessels attacked near Hormuz. The IEA cut its 2026 oil demand outlook, citing a diesel crisis. The dollar index is near 102.25, EUR/USD near 1.12 and USD/JPY near 158.2. Gold fell about 0.5% to roughly $4,140 to $4,168, and Bitcoin is near $83,500. [TradingKey, 10/14; Investrade, 10/14; ZeroHedge, 10/14]
Volatility. The VIX sits near 15 to 15.8, low for a hot CPI day with a Saudi oil site under fire. [ZeroHedge, 10/14; Investing.com, 10/14]
2. Economic Calendar
| Release / Event | Time (ET) | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| CPI, September (released) | 8:30 AM | Headline +0.6% / 3.7% vs. 0.6% / 3.6% expected; core +0.3% / 2.6% vs. 0.2% / 2.5%. The core beat, not the energy-led headline, moved the 10-year. |
| EIA Crude Inventories | 10:30 AM | With gasoline up 9.1% in CPI and Brent at $106, a large product draw would add to the energy-pass-through worry. |
| Fed: Tom Barkin (Richmond) | 1:30 PM | A centrist. The first Fed voice after the print; any comment on core breadth versus energy will move December pricing. |
| Fed Beige Book | 2:00 PM | Regional anecdotes on pass-through of fuel and diesel costs into prices and on hiring. Firms passing costs through would support the hawks. |
| Fed: Austan Goolsbee (Chicago) | 3:00 PM | Has leaned dovish, stressing patience on energy shocks. A shift in tone after a hot core would be notable. |
| Fed: Michelle Bowman | 10:55 PM | Has preferred no further hikes in 2026, a dovish lean. Her read of the core beat sets the tone for Thursday. |
[ANALYSIS] The Fed funds range is 3.75% to 4.00% after September's hike. Before the print, swaps priced about 24% odds of another hike on October 28, and strategists said the data mostly decides December. Thursday brings PPI and retail sales, then Warsh at the IMF in the evening before the blackout. Wednesday's speakers are the first test of whether the committee reads 0.3% core as noise or as pass-through. [ZeroHedge, 10/14; Investing.com, 10/14]
3. Earnings Spotlight
Also reporting. Progressive, State Street and Fastenal reported before the open, with no market-moving reaction in our sources by publication time. AZZ beat with adjusted EPS of $2.00 vs. $1.85 and sales of $486.9M vs. $463.5M. Anthropic is reported to disclose its third-quarter financials to institutional investors today for the first time, an unconfirmed report that matters for the AI revenue audit. 4. Pre-Market Movers: Upside
5. Pre-Market Movers: Downside
6. Sector Rotation Radar
STRONG: Asset Gatherers Over Lenders
BlackRock (+3% to +5%) took in $205B and Morgan Stanley's wealth unit took in $232.4B of net new assets, while Bank of America fell about 4% on trading and a penalty. Durability: fee businesses tied to asset levels hold up better than spread and trading income if rates stay high, unless equities correct. [TradingKey, 10/14; MS 8-K, 10/14]
WEAK: Memory and AI Hardware
Micron, SanDisk, HPE, Dell and NetApp are lower, the semiconductor index has fallen five straight days, and Tuesday's Kospi drop hit SK hynix and Samsung. Durability: tied to two unresolved audits, AI revenue and Chinese memory supply, with no near-term data to settle either. [CoinCentral, 10/14; ZeroHedge, 10/14]
[ANALYSIS] Refiners are the energy trade to watch after a 9.1% gasoline jump in CPI. Valero, Phillips 66 and Marathon Petroleum showed gains of about 4% to 4.7% in Investing.com quote data, and the Aramco strike supports product margins. A hotter rate path is the risk for every sector except those that sell the commodity driving it.
7. Today's Session Playbook
- Fed voices after a hot core. Barkin at 1:30 PM, the Beige Book at 2:00 PM, Goolsbee at 3:00 PM. Any speaker treating 0.3% core as pass-through, not noise, lifts October hike odds from about 24%.
- Banks: fees beat spreads. Watch whether Bank of America finds support after a roughly 4% gap and whether Morgan Stanley's flat reaction resolves up on record wealth flows. JPMorgan, Goldman and Citi closed lower Tuesday, so the group is fragile.
- S&P 500 level: Tuesday's 7,805.65 close and the 7,801.77 support named last week are the line. A close below on rising yields would open last Thursday's 7,765.36 low; the 7,818.93 record caps the upside.
- Event risk: Saudi oil sites. The Houthis have named Aramco facilities and airports as targets and warned of overnight strikes. Confirmed damage at Dhahran or a Riyadh refinery would test Brent's $106 calm.
- Under-the-radar: Anthropic's numbers. Unconfirmed reports say Anthropic shows institutional investors its Q3 financials today. A strong figure could steady memory and AI hardware; a weak one extends the AI revenue audit. [Investing.com via CNBC, 10/14]
Since Friday our research has framed September CPI as the fork: a 0.2% core keeps oil a cost the Fed can look through, while a hot core turns it into a rate term. The print took the hot branch by the smallest margin, core +0.3% against 0.2%. The 10-year rose about 6 basis points in minutes. On Tuesday we wrote that yields price oil on the day; this morning they priced core, with Brent nearly flat. That refines the thesis: oil sets the long bond until the data shows it spreading, and today it showed some spreading.
Scoring Tuesday's calls honestly. Goldman, our Opportunity, closed about 0.2% lower after a 2.8% premarket gain: a miss. JPMorgan (Wait for Open) closed down about 0.9%, and Citi (Wait for Open) fell about 5.5% to 5.6% despite a beat: both right to wait. Johnson & Johnson, our Possible Entry, fell 5.73%: wrong, and the GAAP charge we noted was the cause. UnitedHealth (Momentum Play) closed slightly lower, a fade. The memory Wait for Clarity calls held as the group fell again. The S&P closed at 7,805.65, just above the 7,801.77 support. VF Corp. and Syndax closes were not found in our sources.
The hypothesis now: the bank tape is showing where higher rates pay and where they cost. Rates paid JPMorgan's interest-income guide on Tuesday, but today the winners are paid on assets and activity: BlackRock's $205B of inflows and Morgan Stanley's $232.4B of wealth assets. Bank of America's 8% interest-income growth could not cover a trading miss. If Thursday's PPI and retail sales confirm pass-through, December hike pricing firms, and the market should keep favoring fee-based financials over lenders and rate-sensitive growth. A soft PPI would make today's core a one-month blip and put oil back as the only variable that matters.
