At a Glance: What Moves the Tape
- Futures higher: S&P 500 futures +0.37% near 7,743, Nasdaq 100 +0.59%, Dow +0.21%, Russell 2000 +0.44%. [Yahoo Finance, 10/27]
- Meta’s raise: the equity package is now $97.5B: $25B of common at $625 a share, $12.5B of convertible preferred and up to $60B at the market from 2027. Nvidia is investing $3B. [Reuters via Investing.com, 10/27]
- Anthropic’s S-1: first-half revenue of $16.3B against $1.16B a year earlier, a $693M operating loss, and a Nasdaq listing as ANT. Chips rallied 2.82% Monday on the filing. [CryptoBriefing, 10/27; CappNotes, 10/26]

1. Macro Pulse
Monday’s close: AI led. The S&P 500 rose 0.70% to 7,676.77, the Nasdaq Composite 0.82% to 26,169.38, the Dow 0.28% to 52,361.58 and the Russell 2000 0.38% to 2,786.42. The chip index jumped 2.82% to 11,083.47. [CappNotes, 10/26; Investrade, 10/26]
Breadth stayed narrow. The equal-weight S&P 500 rose only 0.35%. Technology gained 1.69% and industrials 1.42%; communication services fell 1.57% and staples 0.34%. On the Nasdaq, new lows beat new highs 349 to 82. [CappNotes, 10/26]
Futures this morning. S&P 500 futures are up 0.37% near 7,742.75, Nasdaq 100 futures 0.59%, Dow futures 0.21% and Russell 2000 futures 0.44%. At 3:56 AM, Nasdaq futures had been down 0.4%; the bid built through the morning. [Yahoo Finance, 10/27; Reuters via AOL, 10/27]
Bonds: still on the line. The 10-year closed Monday unchanged at 4.987% and is near 4.99% this morning; the 2-year rose 3.2bp to 4.712% and the 30-year fell 1.4bp to 5.300%. Monday’s $69B 2-year auction stopped at 4.787% with a 0.2bp tail, an average result. [CappNotes, 10/26; investingLive, 10/26; Yahoo Finance, 10/27]
Oil: high and sticky. December Brent settled down 0.8% Monday at $115.81 and WTI down 1.7% at $101.57. This morning Brent is near $116 and WTI near $102. Hormuz flows are about 60% of normal, and October has been the worst month for shipping attacks there since tracking began in 2017. [CappNotes, 10/26; Investrade, 10/27; Equentis, 10/27]
[ANALYSIS] Brent sits within a dollar of its four-year high, yet the 10-year has not moved in two sessions. With no fresh growth shock, the bond is waiting on the Fed rather than pricing oil.
Overseas. Korea’s Kospi rose 3.1% to 5,638.34, strong enough to trigger a sidecar halt, and Japan’s Nikkei 1.7% to 63,268.37 on chips. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.7%. In Europe, the STOXX 600 slipped 0.3% early and the FTSE 100 about 0.8% to 1% as HSBC fell about 6% on a profit miss. [AP via News4Jax, 10/27; Bloomberg, 10/27; investingLive, 10/27]
Gold, dollar, crypto, volatility. Gold is near $4,010 to $4,040. The dollar index is up 0.15% at 102.18; EUR/USD 1.1143, USD/JPY 157.67. Bitcoin is near $80,100. The VIX closed Monday at 18.39 and traded near 17.73 overnight. [FXStreet, 10/27; Investrade, 10/27; Yahoo Finance, 10/27; CappNotes, 10/26]
2. Economic Calendar
| Release / Event | Time (ET) | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Durable goods (Sept), released | 8:30 AM | +1.8% vs +0.6% expected; August −0.1%. Aircraft drove it; ex-transportation +0.5%. A firm print that keeps the growth scare off the table. |
| Case-Shiller home prices (Aug) | 9:00 AM | Consensus +0.3%. Housing starts and pending sales hit multi-year lows last week; prices are the last leg to crack. |
| Consumer confidence (Oct) | 10:00 AM | Consensus about 81. A weak number is the growth signal the defensive trade needs; a firm one hands the yield back to oil. |
| New home sales (Sept); Richmond Fed (Oct) | 10:00 AM | New home sales consensus 650K. Richmond Fed prior −2. |
| 5-year note auction ($70B) | 1:00 PM | After an average 2-year sale, a tail here would push the belly of the curve higher the day before the Fed. |
| Fed | All day | Day one of the October 27–28 meeting; no speakers (blackout). Decision Wednesday 2:00 PM, Warsh press conference 2:30 PM. |
| Earnings after the close | After 4:00 PM | Visa and Seagate. Microsoft and Alphabet report Wednesday night, Amazon Thursday. |
[ANALYSIS] The durable goods headline is mostly aircraft, which flatters it. Ex-transportation at +0.5% is solid, not hot. It does not change the Fed’s hold; it makes a dovish surprise Wednesday less likely. [Investrade, 10/27; investingLive, 10/27; Kiplinger, 10/27]
3. Earnings Spotlight
[ANALYSIS] Visa and Seagate report tonight. Seagate is the read for storage: Western Digital beat and fell last Thursday, so the bar is a raise, not a beat.
4. Pre-Market Movers: Upside
5. Pre-Market Movers: Downside
6. Sector Rotation Radar
STRONG: Semiconductors
The chip index rose 2.82% Monday on Anthropic’s filing, Kospi gained 3.1% and Nikkei 1.7% overnight, and Broadcom and Micron are up 2.4% premarket. Durability: low until Microsoft and Alphabet report Wednesday; the index is still below where it stood before last Thursday’s 6.72% drop. [CappNotes, 10/26; AP via News4Jax, 10/27]
WEAK: Communication Services
The sector fell 1.57% Monday, the worst of the 11, as Meta announced its equity raise and Verizon fell 3.49% despite a raised guide. Durability: Meta’s $60B at-the-market program is a supply overhang through 2027. [CappNotes, 10/26]
[ANALYSIS] Monday split AI in two: the companies that sell to AI rose, the company that has to fund it fell. The equal-weight index lagged by 0.35 points, so this is still a narrow rally.
7. Today’s Session Playbook
- Data: consumer confidence at 10:00 AM, the 5-year auction at 1:00 PM. Durable goods already beat. A firm confidence number plus a tail in the auction would put the 10-year over 5% before the Fed.
- Top story: Meta’s $97.5B raise. Watch whether Meta holds the $625 offering price. A break below it would tell AI investors that dilution, not demand, is the constraint.
- S&P 500 levels: futures imply an open near 7,705. Support is 7,676.77, Monday’s close, then 7,663.43; resistance is 7,757.17, then the 7,818.93 record.
- Event risk: the Fed and Brent. The decision is Wednesday at 2:00 PM, with Microsoft and Alphabet that night. Brent near $116 is within a dollar of its four-year high, with Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure continuing.
- Under-the-radar: Seagate tonight. Storage stocks beat and sold last week. A raise from Seagate would show whether the cycle audit has reached its limit, or whether every AI supplier still gets sold.
Monday our research framed the week as a bond test: strong data and Brent above $115 would put the 10-year over 5%; weak data and Tehran progress would restart the defensive rotation. Neither came. The 10-year closed unchanged at 4.987% and Brent eased 0.8% to $115.81. The tape was decided by AI capital. Anthropic’s filing showed $16.3B of first-half revenue and lifted the chip index 2.82%. Meta enlarged its equity raise and fell 1.88%. The bond hypothesis is untested, not wrong; it waits for the Fed.
Our Monday calls: Tesla, our Momentum Play, rose 5.21%, our best call. Surgery Partners, Wait for Open, closed up 47.62% after a signed $23.50 cash deal; waiting cost part of the gain. Range Resources, Avoid Chasing, rose 17.66%, beyond its premarket gap: wrong on the day. Xencor, Momentum Play, closed up 15.89%, about half its premarket gain. SpaceX, Wait for Open, slipped 0.40%. Fair Isaac, Wait for Clarity, fell 13.15%; waiting was right. Verizon, Wait for Open, fell 3.49%; the open did its job. The Brazil ETF, Wait for Clarity, closed down 19.82% after a 25% premarket gap, and the Ibovespa fell 13.88%. Of the neoclouds, our Dead Cat Watch, Nebius fell 3.45% but CoreWeave and IREN rose. The S&P 500 cleared 7,663.43 resistance. We could not confirm Monday closes for Moderna or EQT. [CappNotes, 10/26; Axios, 10/26; GuruFocus, 10/26]
The hypothesis now: the AI audit has moved from credit to equity. Since October 15 we tracked the cost of AI debt, from CoreWeave’s bonds to Meta’s record CDS. In two weeks the largest players have raised outside that market: SpaceX $40B of debt, Meta $97.5B of equity, Anthropic a listing reported at $100B or more. The market pays the issuer that shows revenue and charges the issuer that sells shares. Nvidia buying $3B of its customer’s stock brings back the circular-financing question we set aside in August. The test is Wednesday night. If Microsoft and Alphabet show revenue outrunning capex without new capital, the chip rally broadens. If either signals heavier funding, Monday was a relief rally. Investors, and we, should watch Meta against $625 and the 10-year against 5%.
