Microsoft grew Azure 48% and spent less than expected; Alphabet grew cloud 103% and burned $9.07 billion of cash. Nasdaq 100 futures are down about 1.1%, the economy grew 3.4% in the third quarter, and two Fed officials voted to hike Wednesday.
Research compiled from pre-market reporting (~4:00 to ~9:10 AM ET). Wednesday our research set the test: if Warsh left December open and Microsoft and Alphabet showed cloud revenue outrunning capex, the chip rally could broaden. Warsh left December open. Microsoft passed. Alphabet did not, and the market is charging it for the cash it spent.

[ANALYSIS] The curve steepened after the decision: the front end held while the long end sold. Warsh said some 2027 and 2028 meetings will carry no rate vote, and the long bond read that as less near-term easing, not more. [Saxo, 10/29]

Oil: up on strike reports, down on diplomacy. Brent settled up 1.26% Wednesday at $115.32 and WTI up 2.88% at $102.78, and crude stocks fell 1.9M barrels against an expected build. 2. Economic Calendar

Release / EventTime (ET)Why It Matters
GDP, third quarter (advance), released8:30 AM3.4% annualized vs 3.2% expected and 2.2% in the second quarter. A strong economy removes any growth case for easing.
PCE prices (Sept), released8:30 AMHeadline 3.6% YoY and core 3.1%, both in line, up from 3.4% and 3.0%. Inflation is still moving away from target, which is the case for a December hike.
Initial jobless claims, released8:30 AM194,000 vs about 198,000 to 199,000 expected; continuing claims fell to 1.701M. No sign of labor slack.

[ANALYSIS] Today’s data took away the easy exit. Growth beat, claims fell and inflation matched forecasts at 3.6%, so December hike odds near 81% to 85% stay where Warsh left them. [Benzinga, 10/29; FXStreet, 10/29; Investing.com, 10/28; NordFX, 10/29]

3. Earnings Spotlight

GOOGL Alphabet · Search, Cloud & Advertising
About −10.2% to −10.4% premarket
Reported: EPS $2.12 vs $3.03 expected, cut by an $8.7B loss on equity holdings; revenue $127.6B, up 24.7%, vs $127.91B. Operating income $40.58B vs $43.16B. [Newsquawk, 10/29; Motley Fool, 10/29]
Segments: cloud revenue rose 103% to $30.71B vs $29.1B, with a $561B backlog. Search revenue was $63.35B vs $64.85B, and growth slowed to 12% from 17%. YouTube ads missed. [Newsquawk, 10/29; StockTitan, 10/28]
Guidance: 2026 capex held at $195B to $205B; 2027 capex to rise significantly, reported above $300B. Free cash flow was negative $9.07B vs positive $24.6B a year earlier. [CappNotes, 10/28; Newsquawk, 10/29; Motley Fool, 10/29]
Earnings Quality: QUALITY CONCERN The GAAP miss is partly an investment mark, but operating income also missed by 6%, and the cash flow turned negative.
[ANALYSIS] Cloud is a success; search, the cash engine, slowed. The market is on track to erase more than $400B of value because capex now outruns the cash that pays for it. [Reuters via Yahoo, 10/29]

MSFT Microsoft · Software & Cloud
About +2.1% to +4% premarket
Reported: EPS $4.92 vs $4.72 expected; revenue $92.3B vs $90.6B. Azure grew 48% vs about 44.8% expected; commercial remaining performance obligations reached $677B. [Newsquawk, 10/29; CappNotes, 10/28]
Guidance: next-quarter revenue $96.0B to $97.1B, Azure growth of 49% to 50%, capex above $50B. Quarterly capex was $39.37B vs $45.93B expected; free cash flow $18.6B. [Newsquawk, 10/29]
Earnings Quality: CLEAN BEAT A beat on both lines, Azure accelerating, and positive cash flow after capex.
[ANALYSIS] This is the profile our research said gets paid: revenue growth outrunning spending, funded from cash. The stock closed Wednesday at $531.01 before the report.

CAT Caterpillar · Machinery & Power
About −9% to −9.7% premarket
Reported: adjusted EPS $7.20 vs about $7.08 expected; GAAP EPS $7.13. Revenue $20.7B, up 17%. Order backlog a record $78.1B, up $6B in the quarter. [Caterpillar 8-K, 10/29; Rallies.ai, 10/29]
Guidance: maintained. 2026 revenue growth in the mid-to-high teens vs about 18% expected; tariff costs still about $2.2B. [Rallies.ai, 10/29]
Earnings Quality: BEAT, SOLD GAAP and adjusted EPS are close; the guide did not rise with the backlog.
[ANALYSIS] The stock had priced data-center power as a raise. A held guide in a 5% rate world is a miss, and Alphabet’s cash burn raises doubts about the buyers of that power. [24/7 Wall St., 10/29]

LLY Eli Lilly · Pharmaceuticals
About +4% premarket
Reported: adjusted EPS $7.48 vs $6.26 expected; revenue $24.40B vs $22.61B, on its GLP-1 drugs. [CNBC, 10/29; Yahoo Finance, 10/29]
Guidance: raised. 2026 revenue now $91B to $92B, from $85B to $87B. [CNBC, 10/29]
Earnings Quality: CLEAN BEAT A 19% EPS beat, an 8% revenue beat and a raise of about $5.5B at the midpoint. GAAP EPS was not in our sources.
[ANALYSIS] The raise rule pays outside AI again. A drug maker with demand ahead of supply needs no capital and no rate cut to grow.

[ANALYSIS] Ford beat on EPS, $0.49 vs $0.41, and raised its 2026 adjusted EBIT guide to $10.5B to $11B, yet slipped about 1.4% after hours; sources disagree on whether revenue beat. [Newsquawk, 10/29; CappNotes, 10/28]

4. Pre-Market Movers: Upside

DASH DoorDash · Delivery Platforms
About +5% premarket
Catalyst: DoorDash agreed to buy Instacart for $17B, or $65 a share, 75% in cash, a 26% premium to Instacart’s October 22 close. Instacart shares edged lower. [Yahoo Finance, 10/29]
Signal Check: Real, announced deal. The buyer is rising, which breaks the pattern we tracked in early October, when deal buyers were punished.
[ANALYSIS] Paid mostly in cash and priced at a modest premium, the deal reads as consolidation, not a stretch. Antitrust review is the risk; a first-hour hold confirms the read.

CMG Chipotle Mexican Grill · Restaurants
About +7% premarket
Catalyst: same-store sales rose 2.1% vs 1.5% expected; revenue grew 9.6%. EPS was $0.27, and net income fell 11.1%. [CappNotes, 10/28; Motley Fool, 10/29; StockTitan, 10/28]
Signal Check: Real but narrow. A traffic beat with falling profit is a low bar cleared.
[ANALYSIS] GDP at 3.4% supports the consumer, but margins are shrinking. The comp beat is the story; the profit decline caps the follow-through.
Momentum Play
CVNA Carvana · Online Auto Retail
About +7.5% to +8% premarket
Catalyst: record quarterly revenue, and CappNotes ties the move to the SEC closing its probe of the company. [StockTitan, 10/28; CappNotes, 10/28; Reuters via Yahoo, 10/29]
Signal Check: Real on two counts, but EPS and revenue against estimates were not in our sources.
[ANALYSIS] Removing a regulatory overhang lifts the multiple once. Auto loans priced off a 5% 10-year are the cost the next quarter must carry.

EBAY eBay · E-Commerce
About +4.7% after hours
Catalyst: adjusted EPS $1.51 vs $1.41 expected; revenue $3.2B, up 14%, vs $3.12B. [Newsquawk, 10/29; StockTitan, 10/28]
Signal Check: Real. A 7% EPS beat and double-digit revenue growth for a company that grew in low single digits for years.
[ANALYSIS] A cash-generating platform with no AI capex bill. On a day that charges spenders, that profile is worth owning on a pullback.
Opportunity
LITE Lumentum · Optical Components
About +4% to +5% premarket
Catalyst: Bloomberg reported Marvell is in advanced talks to buy the company; a deal could come as soon as next week. Lumentum is valued near $83B. [Yahoo Finance via Bloomberg, 10/29; Motley Fool, 10/29]
Signal Check: Unconfirmed reports of talks; no announced price. The stock already rose sharply Wednesday.
[ANALYSIS] Without a price, the premium is a guess. Our sources say Lumentum is booked for AI components through 2029, which supports the value, not the chase.

5. Pre-Market Movers: Downside

FTNT Fortinet · Cybersecurity
About −25% to −26% premarket
Catalyst: adjusted EPS $0.91 vs $0.86 expected; revenue $2.08B, up 20%, vs $2.06B. It raised 2026 revenue guidance but cut its service revenue forecast and guided fourth-quarter growth near 15%. [Newsquawk, 10/29; StockTitan, 10/28; Motley Fool, 10/29]
Damage Assessment: Service revenue is the recurring base the multiple rests on. A cut there is more than a one-quarter issue.
[ANALYSIS] The stock fell 5.90% in the session before the report, then a quarter of its value after. Beat and raise, sold anyway: the mix of the raise matters as much as its size.

NOW ServiceNow · Enterprise Software
About −18% to −20% premarket
Catalyst: adjusted EPS $1.00 vs $1.02 expected; revenue $4.11B vs $4.09B. Fourth-quarter subscription backlog growth guided to 18.5% vs 19% expected. [Newsquawk, 10/29; CappNotes, 10/28]
Damage Assessment: A two-cent miss and a half-point backlog shortfall; professional services ran a $23M gross loss. [Motley Fool, 10/29]
[ANALYSIS] A 19% drop on a half-point guide is the delta rule at its harshest. Software growing 18% is now priced as a loser to AI, the destroyer thread we tracked in August.
Dead Cat Watch
MRVL Marvell Technology · Semiconductors
About −10% to −11% premarket
Catalyst: Bloomberg reported advanced talks to buy Lumentum, valued near $83B, more than a third of Marvell’s roughly $221B value. Stifel kept its Buy rating. [Yahoo Finance via Bloomberg, 10/29; Investing.com, 10/29; Motley Fool, 10/29]
Damage Assessment: A deal that size means heavy share issuance, debt or both. The fall prices that cost, not a change in demand.
[ANALYSIS] The buyer audit is back, with a capital term: on Monday Meta was charged for selling shares, and today Marvell is charged for a deal it must fund.

NVDA · AMD · INTC · MU Chipmakers · Semiconductors
NVDA about −0.5%, AMD −2.5%, INTC −3.5%, MU near −4%
Catalyst: sympathy with Alphabet’s cash burn and a Samsung profit miss that pulled the Kospi down about 1%. [Reuters via Yahoo, 10/29; Yahoo Finance, 10/28; Newsquawk, 10/29]
Damage Assessment: No company news. Alphabet’s 2027 capex is set to rise, which is more revenue for these suppliers, not less.
[ANALYSIS] This is the cycle audit from October 22: the market sells AI suppliers when spenders spend more and when they spend less. Intel and Amazon report tonight.

6. Sector Rotation Radar

STRONG: Pharma and Small Caps

Lilly is up about 4% on a $5.5B guidance raise, and Russell 2000 futures are up 0.3% while the Nasdaq 100 is down 1.1%. Durability: pharma rests on demand, not capital; small caps need the 10-year to stay near 5%, not climb. [CNBC, 10/29; Yahoo Finance, 10/29]

WEAK: Software and the AI Build-Out

Fortinet is down about 26%, ServiceNow about 19%, Alphabet about 10% and Caterpillar about 9%. Durability: the software losses are guide resets; the build-out names depend on Amazon tonight. [Reuters via Yahoo, 10/29; Newsquawk, 10/29]

[ANALYSIS] The equal-weight index fell 0.04% Wednesday while the S&P 500 rose 0.28%. This morning the split runs the other way, with small caps up and megacap tech down.

7. Today’s Session Playbook

  1. Data: growth beat, inflation in line. GDP 3.4%, claims 194,000, core PCE 3.1%. Watch whether the 10-year holds above 5% into the 1:00 PM 7-year auction.
  2. Top story: Alphabet’s cash. Cloud grew 103% and the stock is down 10% on negative free cash flow. Amazon after the close must show AWS growth funded by its own cash.
  3. S&P 500 levels: futures imply an open near 7,716. Support is 7,722.60, then 7,676.77; resistance is 7,743.98, Wednesday’s close, then 7,757.17.
  4. Event risk: Iran headlines both ways. WTI is down on reports of US outreach to Tehran, while earlier reports had the US resuming strikes after the November 3 midterms.
  5. Under-the-radar: the 7-year auction. With the 10-year above 5% and two hike dissents, a weak sale would push the long end higher on a day already selling growth stocks.
The Weekly Edge · [ANALYSIS] Hypothesis only, not a recommendation
The AI audit has moved to cash: the market pays revenue that outruns spending and charges every company whose spending outruns its cash

Wednesday our research set the test: if Warsh left December open and Microsoft and Alphabet showed cloud revenue outrunning capex, the rally could broaden. Warsh declined to prejudge December, but two officials voted to hike and the 10-year rose 5.2bp to 5.044%. Microsoft passed: Azure grew 48% and quarterly capex came in below forecast. Alphabet failed on cash, not growth. Cloud grew 103%, yet free cash flow was negative $9.07B and 2027 capex is set to rise sharply. The bad branch of our fork fired through Alphabet, and the narrow rally is losing its anchor this morning.

Our Wednesday calls: Vertiv, our Momentum Play, rose 16.48%, and SK Hynix’s US listing, Momentum Play, 13.30%, our two best calls. Seagate, Possible Entry, rose 4.51%. GE HealthCare and Ultra Clean, both Wait for Open, rose 6.62% and about 8.5%; waiting cost some upside. Enphase, Structural Issue, fell 16.03%, and SolarEdge 8.3%. Boston Scientific, Dead Cat Watch, fell 5.84%. F5, Wait for Clarity, fell 20.43%; waiting was right. GE Vernova, our Opportunity, fell 1.90%, a miss. Visa, Wait for Clarity, fell 0.31%; Robinhood fell 3.31%. Meta closed at $612.49, below its $625 offering price, so our Monday test failed. The S&P 500 held 7,722.60 support and closed at 7,743.98, short of 7,757.17. NXP, VF Corp and Broadcom closes were not in our sources. [CappNotes, 10/28; StockTitan, 10/28; Motley Fool, 10/29]

The hypothesis now: after capex, revenue, credit, the cycle and equity, the fifth audit is cash. Microsoft and Oracle, which capped its fundraising at $20B, are paid. Alphabet, Meta below $625 and Marvell, which faces funding an $83B deal, are charged. The economy adds a rate term: GDP at 3.4% and claims at 194,000 give the Fed no reason to wait. The test is Amazon tonight. If AWS growth arrives with positive free cash flow and the 10-year holds near 5%, the market is pricing spenders one by one. If Amazon also burns cash, the audit covers the whole hyperscaler group. Investors, and we, should watch free cash flow, not the cloud growth line.
